Policy
New Zealand Police has developed the Acceptable Use of Generative AI (genAI) Policy.
This policy will govern the use of genAI tools within NZ Police when tools are approved for use. Although there are currently no genAI tools approved for use by Police, this Policy ensures that appropriate safeguards are in place for Police’s use of genAI in the future, and that use of genAI is lawful, ethical, proportionate, and safe in a New Zealand policing context.

Research
In early 2024 Police Evidence Based Policing Centre (EBPC) completed two reviews from open-source information to provide an evidence-based understanding of the potential opportunities and challenges for the use of AI within law enforcement in the FVEY countries (United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand).
AI Report 1: AI technologies currently used to improve crime prevention, detection and community safety.
AI Report 2: AI technologies for improved efficiency and service delivery. Technologies referred to within the research are not used by Police, unless specifically stated.
Research is an important tool for ensuring we are aware of the challenges and benefits of using AI technologies. The research from EBPC provided Police with useful insights into AI and provided a foundation for future exploration of AI technology in a safe manner.
Its important Police understands the parameters and potential consequences of the use of this kind of technology.
