What is a Formal Warning?
Formal Warnings are one of the tools Police can use to resolve offences, without requiring court action.
When someone commits an offence, Police may consider if a formal warning is an appropriate option as an alternative to prosecution.
When a formal warning is issued, the information is recorded in the Police database, and the person receives a written Formal Warning letter detailing the warning related to the alleged offence.
A formal warning is also subject to disclosure, for example for Police Vetting Services.
