Southland Road Policing teams have always had a close connection to partner agency Road Safety Southland, and recently they collaborated with the Southland Sharks NBL basketball team to spread the word on RIDS (Restraints, Impairment, Distraction, Speed) safety messaging.
In a video starring some of the Sharks superstar players, as well as Southland Police’s very own Road Policing Sergeant Geoff Sutherland, the safety messaging is loud and clear… and tall.
“The Sharks players are real role models in our Southern communities,” says Geoff, “so to have them onboard as our Road to Zero Superheroes promotion just made perfect sense.”
Geoff and Road Safety Southland officially launched the video at a recent Southland Sharks game at the ILT Stadium Southland.
“This was a great opportunity for us to not only showcase the video and promote the message, but also to engage with our local communities in a really fun way.
“We brought the Mobile Road Safety Base down to the stadium, the Media Works team put on a sausage sizzle alongside us, we had heaps of goodies to hand out and even donned our superhero capes to really get into the swing of things.”
The event was a huge success, with a packed ILT stadium taking on board the messaging and enjoying all the fun and festivities - and a great game of basketball.
