Wellington District’s brand new Mobile Police Base (MPB) is headed to the Wairarapa.
A team led by Area Prevention Manager Sergeant Ian Osland picked up the truck and headed back to Masterton to start duties.
“The MPB is a valuable resource to reach remote areas like Cape Palliser, Ngawi, Ocean Beach, Riversdale Beach and Castlepoint, which will help connect us with our rural communities," says Ian.
“It’s kitted out with the latest technology and can be used as an operational base as required.
“With the ability to work from laptops, we can stay longer in remote places to spend valuable time connecting with the local community, give crime prevention advice and build trust and confidence with our community.”
Ian says members of the public can still contact police by phone, approach them in the street, encounter them on roadsides and in the community.
"It’s good to be able to interact with us at police stations and mobile bases. Our base will be used in a number of different ways including local recruitment drives and running prevention activities."
The MPB features an indoor and outdoor space (with a sun awning), with outdoor seats and a table for the community to stop by and have a chat.
It is likely to be used at a number of large scale events such as Toast Martinborough and the 121 Festival and will regularly visit schools as part of community engagement.
