Dunedin Police would like to remind motorists to slow down and stop for amber and red lights following recent reports of red light runners.
We are particularly concerned about reports of red light runners at the start of the school term, at a time when our tamariki are regularly crossing roads.
People need to remember that it is not worth it, no matter if you have done it before. Every time you run a red light you run the risk of causing serious harm to yourself, or somebody else.
Ask yourself; is it worth crashing and risking injury – or worse, death – just to get across an intersection without having to wait for another light change?
Police will continue to monitor driver behaviour at intersections and have a presence at schools during drop-off and pick-up times.
We would much rather educate drivers and see improvements in behaviour rather than be focused solely on enforcement.
At the end of the day, road safety is everybody’s responsibility. Everybody needs to drive with care so everyone can get to their destination safely.
The decisions you make as a driver impact not only you and those in your vehicle, but everyone else on the road as well. So please, take care and be patient.
