Hamilton Police have arrested a fleeing driver after the man swapped his car for a bicycle.
Police were alerted to the erratic manner of a red Nissan Maxima car being driven from Tamahere towards Hamilton around 6pm yesterday (November 8).
A patrol vehicle attempted to pull over the vehicle but the driver fled.
Police followed for a time throughout the Hamilton East area but the pursuit was abandoned on East Street due to the nature of the man’s driving.
At about 6.10pm another member of the public called to say the same vehicle was parked on Casey Avenue.
Police attended and again the man fled from police, this time on a stolen bicycle.
An officer initiated a pursuit on foot and managed to grab the driver-turned-cyclist.
Sergeant Chris McRae says “Police would like to thank the members of the public that called 111 and assisted us in catching this offender who endangered so many members of the public by his manner of driving.
“He now faces numerous charges relating to the incident as well as charges relating to stolen property.
“We would like to hear from any other members of the public that saw the fleeing vehicle.”
A 41-year-old man is due to appear in Hamilton District Court today.
