Clickity clack, front and back this Easter

Southern District Police are reminding motorists to continue to take care on the roads as the Easter Holiday period approaches. 
 
Police are expecting an increase in road users on Southland highways during the holiday period, which runs from 4pm on Thursday 29 March to 6am Tuesday 3 April. 
 
With events like Ed Sheeran in Dunedin, and Warbirds Over Wanaka, the traffic increase on our highways will be significant.
 
The highest crash risk period is on Thursday between 4pm and 8pm, when motorists will be leaving for their holiday destinations. 
 
With this expected increase, Police are reminding visitors and other members of the public to take extra care on the roads during this period. 
 
“We will be making a conscious effort to keep all those travelling on our roads safe and ensure every gets to their destinations,” says Constable Daniel McLeod, Southland Road Policing. 
 
“Southland Police will be running a road policing operation focusing on the use of seatbelts and drivers distracted by the use of cellphones. 
 
“Unfortunately not wearing seatbelts is still a major factor when it comes to fatal crashes.
 
“Don’t forget about the kids either - we’ll be stopping and checking our tamariki are safely buckled in to approved baby capsules, car seats and booster seats.
 
“If we all remember to ‘clickity clack, front and back’ then we know we’ve taken a big step to keep each other safe this Easter.
 
“Distracted drivers have also had their part to play in relation to serious injury and fatal crashes so this will be a key part in the prevention operation. 
 
“Any number is too many when talking about deaths on our roads and people not making it home to their families."
