Police are asking all drivers to take extra care with the current cold snap upon us. Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Holmes of the Western Bay of Plenty Road Policing unit says road conditions and visibility can change very quickly.
Drivers need to reduce their speed and increase their following distances and drive with headlights on. Mr Holmes urged all drivers to take extreme care as the risk of losing control in the slippery conditions was high.
Meanwhile in Wellington, Police are warning people not to play near busy roadsides.
Wellington District Road Policing Manager Inspector Peter Baird says motorists stopping near busy State Highways to play in the snow are putting themselves, their children and other road users in danger.
"During the recent road closure on the Rimutaka Hill Road, there were reports of children running between cars and crossing the road to get closer to the snow, putting themselves at real risk in the icy conditions."
Inspector Baird says, "We suggest those who want to play in the snow avoid busy roads and State Highways and find some quieter streets to enjoy the white stuff.
"Police and maintenance contractors have a busy job ensuring the safe movement of traffic over the hills and having motorists and their passengers within the vehicle flow is not a good mix."
