Dunedin officers to be recognised at awards ceremony Friday 25 November

1 min read

Police officers will be recognised for a number of achievements and commendations at an awards ceremony in Dunedin tomorrow.
This recognition will include District Commanders Commendations, District Commanders Certificate of Appreciation, Area Commanders Commendations and Certificates of Appreciation and Long Service and Good Conduct medals.
Eight of the District Commanders Commendation’s being presented are in relation to Operation Steelers, the Justin McFarlane homicide investigation, which began in rural North Otago in September 2013.

The investigation was an extremely complex investigation involving multiple offenders, multiple scenes, 105 witnesses and a 44 day trial with a total of ten lawyers representing each of the five accused.  The five accused were found guilty of murder and sentenced to imprisonment and non-parole periods ranging from 17 to 18 years. An appeal relating to the convictions and sentences was dismissed in its entirety, a reflection of the quality of work undertaken by the team and the Crown.
The two civilians receiving District Commander Certificate of Appreciation are Crown Law prosecutors who are being recognised for their dedication, professionalism and major contribution to Operation Steelers, resulting in the successful prosecution of the five offenders and bringing justice to the family of Justin McFarlane.

Staff across Dunedin and Otago will gather at the Dunedin Central Police Station on Great King Street to take part in the awards ceremony.

The ceremony will be attended and awards presented by Assistant Commissioner Mike Pannett, A/C International and National Security (and out-going District Commander).
Media are invited to attend the ceremony at the Dunedin Police station which will begin at 2.00pm.
Media who are intending to come are asked to email stephen.greig@police.govt.nz and should arrive by 1.45pm at the Watchhouse.
