Dunedin Police are warning anyone finding or handling four 20 litre black plastic containers of nitric acid to be extremely careful of the acid’s poisonous nature.
The containers were stolen during a burglary on the night of Monday 5 September from a rural address near Mosgiel, Otago.
Police are concerned that if someone has stolen these containers and they don’t know what they are dealing with, then they are at serious risk of harming themselves.
The stolen nitric acid is usually used in hydroponics and the containers would be clearly labelled as acid and have safety warnings on them. [IMAGE ATTACHED]
Staff using the nitric acid have to use highly protective gear when handling it.
Police believe more than one offender was involved in the incident due to the amount of property stolen.
The intruders cut a padlock on a gate to gain access to the Wingatui Road property.
A number of tools used in the horticultural industry were also taken, including a Husqvarna chainsaw, Hitachi electric chainsaw, pairs of chainsaw chaps, and other electric tools.
Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the stolen containers or has information on the stolen property is urged to contact Dunedin Police on 03 471 4800.
