Proactive policing approach to ensure no ‘car trouble’ this weekend

1 min read

Hawke's Bay Police are gearing up to help ensure a trouble-free weekend on the region’s roads as a number of “car enthusiasts” are expected to arrive in the area.

Eastern District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Matt Broderick, said Police were prepared for an influx of vehicles and people from across the North Island into the Bay as part of a gathering organised via social media.

“As part of our proactive prevention approach, we’ll be ensuring that there’s an appropriate and highly visible Police presence at this event to make sure that all drivers and their vehicles are safe to be on the roads. We’ll also be working to ensure the rest of the community is not impacted by any potential illegal street racing activity.

“While we have no issue with genuine car enthusiasts gathering safely, we will be taking appropriate action to ensure the safety of everyone by checking that vehicles are roadworthy, that drivers have the appropriate licenses and people are not driving dangerously or while impaired by drugs or alcohol,” Mr Broderick said.

“While we will apply the appropriate discretion, unfortunately past experience has shown that these events often result in a number of offences that put other innocent road users at risk or cause significant disruption to others in our community. This includes high speed and unsafe driving, illegal racing, impaired driving and unsafe modified vehicles that should not be on the road.”
