Police have attended multiple break-ins of cars and homes overnight in North Dunedin, prompting a timely reminder to keep property and vehicles secure.
Between 9pm and 10:30pm on Tuesday 9 August 2016 two flats on Leith Street were broken into.
Electronic and personal items were stolen from both flats while the residents were home.
At 11:45pm Police received reports that five cars were broken into that were parked outside Forsyth Barr Stadium.
Acting Senior Sergeant Phil Hamlin is seeking any information related to these incidences.
“At the moment, we know a dark coloured vehicle described as a Subaru Forester or similar was seen leaving the scene shortly before Police arrived.
“As the owners of the vehicles are not in town, it is unclear what items have been taken.
“Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information related to these incidences should contact Dunedin Police.”
Mr Hamlin also asked the public to keep their homes and vehicles secure at all times:
“Cars should be locked, including the boot, and windows should be up whenever motorists are not with their vehicles.
“Park in busy, open and well-lit areas, and keep valuables out of sight of the windows. If it doesn’t need to be in the car, leave it at home.”
Police also recommends the use of additional security measures where possible, such as the use of a car alarm, immobiliser or steering wheel lock.
Mr Hamlin says that keeping your home secure can deter all but the most determined burglar:
“Keep doors and windows locked, even if you’re away for a short time. And always try to keep phones, bags, and other valuables out of sight from your windows.”
