Man killed in Waihi mine accident

A 29-year-old man had died following a work place accident at OceanaGold mine, Waihi last night.

The man was killed after the front end loader he was in rolled down a stope. The accident happened at approximately 6.30pm on Thursday night. An underground mine rescue team carried out a search for the man and he was found in the early hours of this morning in the loader deceased.

WorkSafe and Police are at the scene and are investigating the circumstances of the death.

Area Commander Inspector John Kelly would like to thank all those involved in the rescue operation and also offers his sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased man.
