Police urge Southern road users to drive to the conditions

1 min read

Southern District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Tania Baron is appealing to drivers to drive to the conditions following a number of ice related crashes in the region this morning.

“We have attended over 25 crashes across the district in the past 4 hours due to ice and black ice on roads in South Otago, Gore and Invercargill,” says Inspector Baron.

“This is a particularly timely reminder with school holidays starting on Monday. We urge all road users to exercise caution and drive to the conditions.”

Police encourage drivers to be aware of areas with black ice and to watch following distances and speed.

Always remember:

• Drive to the conditions.

• Allow greater following distances on frosty and wet days.

• Obey emergency road closed signs and barriers.

• Follow the directions of any road patrol or police officer.

• Avoid towing in icy conditions.
