200 grams of methamphetamine posted to an Oamaru address was stopped by Customs and lead to a joint Police and Customs operation this week.
The methamphetamine which has a street value of approximately $200,000, originated in China and was sourced via the internet.
This interception follows – and is linked to – a previous seizure of 102 grams of methamphetamine ($100,000 worth) last week. A 22-year-old man was arrested in relation to that seizure and is now facing charges of importing a class A drug and possession of a class A drug for supply.
In a separate operation, 56 grams of MDMA, with a street value of around $20,000, was intercepted before reaching its intended destination in Dunedin. Again, these drugs originated in China and were sourced using the internet. A 21-year-old man will be facing several charges as a result of this interception.
“If these drugs had reached their intended destination they would have had a significant negative impact on the local communities. Police and Customs are committed to disrupting the supply chain and these interceptions show our efforts are working,” says Detective Senior Sergeant Malcolm Inglis.
“These operations are another example of Customs’ excellent profiling and intervention systems and the value of Customs and Police working together to share their expertise and resources for the common goal of protecting our communities. This is a great outcome for us and Oamaru.” says Customs Investigations Manager, Maurice O’Brien.
