Every so often, we’ll be featuring a story of a how a school has successfully partnered with Police in a ‘school-wide intervention’ to deal with an issue impacting on school safety and student achievement.
This month’s narrative describes how Hastings Girls High School had been finding it difficult to place Gateway students into employment because they had no drivers licences. So, working in partnership with local Police, the school set a goal for all their Year 13 students to gain their learners licences. Through the comprehensive use of the whole school approach, the intervention has had a 100% success rate – all 70 students who sat the driving test passed. The school has since set up a mentor scheme in which the successful students are now the teachers.
Hastings Girls High School is proud that their students are now more employable and are able to take their place as contributing members of society. Many students with learning difficulties have gone on to help other students, which has given them a great sense of pride and accomplishment - something many of them thought they would never achieve.
This narrative is just one of many such stories to be found on the Narratives page on the School Portal.
