Have a weekend to remember
If you’re looking nervously out of the window at the less-than-ideal holiday weather, here’s a reminder of the glories of last weekend.
Police staff were out and about mixing it with their communities at two of New Zealand’s biggest and best – but very different – celebrations: the CubaDupa street festival in Wellington, and Polyfest at the Manukau Sports Bowl.
Among the thousands at the two-day festival in the capital, Police Recruit Mike Byrne got into the spirit of things, hula dancing with piratical entertainer Captain Festus McBoyle and his motley crew.
And at Polyfest officers from a variety of backgrounds donned temporary moko - a great talking point with the crowds, drawing comments including “This is beyond diversity” and “Police has come a long way”, says Constable Mandeep Kaur.
Whatever you do this weekend, please stay safe. Take care while travelling or by the water, go easy on the alcohol and make sure your homes and businesses are secure.
“We want everyone in our communities to have a happy and safe Easter, whether travelling on the roads, out socialising, or heading into the great outdoors,” says Acting Assistant Commissioner Road Policing and Prevention, Dave Trappitt.
Our pictures show Police Recruit Mike Byrne getting into buccaneering mood with Captain Festus and his guitar-playing shipmate Mr Thadius Green at CubaDupa (photo courtesy of Captain Festus McBoyle); and meanwhile, at Polyfest, Senior Constable Karen Murphy and Constables Heber Gasu and Mandeep Kaur with their moko; and Mandeep with Sergeant Petra Solia.
