Alexandra police arrested a 43 year old Alexandra man earlier today and have charged him with a string of deliberately lit fires, including the fire that devastated the Alexandra Branch of Wastebusters earlier this year.
The man, who was arrested without incident, following a complaint about a car set on fire last night, in Alexandra, is to appear in the Queenstown District Court tomorrow.
The Officer in charge of the Wastebusters fire enquiry, Acting Detective Sergeant Alan Lee, said “This is a very pleasing result for the Alexandra Community who have been very patient in what has been a protracted investigation and it is to be hoped that people who may have previously been reluctant to approach us with information, will now do so”.
The man is charged with four separate Arsons – one in regard to Wastebusters and the other three in respect of separate car fires that have occurred over a period of some months.
The man is also charged with two counts of Criminal Damage and a single charge of cultivating Cannabis.
Acting Detective Sergeant Lee has asked for anyone wishing to speak with Police, to make contact with the Alexandra Police Station, on 03 440 2500.
As the matter is now before the Court no further statement will be made.
