As they work to determine the cause of a crash that left a motorcyclist with life changing injuries outside Hamilton, Waikato Police are contemplating if high visibility clothing could have prevented the crash.
District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Freda Grace, said emergency services were called to the scene of the crash on Ruakura Rd shortly after 5pm.
“The crash is still under investigation by the Serious Crash Unit so I can’t confirm the cause however initial indications are it appears the female driver of the eastbound car hasn’t seen a motorcyclist heading in to Hamilton and has turned right, into the rider’s path.
“The male rider suffered status one injuries in the crash and was taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance in a critical condition.”
Mrs Grace said while several questions remain to be answered in relation to the crash two things have become clear to investigators.
“The first is the importance of maintaining your situational awareness while driving and if you’re pulling out or turning you need to check and then check again before carrying out your manoeuvre.
“The second is the value of high visibility. While we don’t believe the motorcyclist was at fault in this incident we do know 12 motorcyclists have died on Waikato roads so far this year and anything that can help you be seen and therefore be safe on the roads is worthwhile.”
