Two men arrested for bank robberies

Counties Manukau Police have arrested two men in relation to a string of robberies carried out at South Auckland banks and a service station between 31 August and 25 September 2015.

A 35-year-old man was arrested on 30 September 2015 and faces seven charges as follows;

• Aggravated Robbery at the Dawson Road Post Shop on 14 September 2015
• Robbery at ASB Botany on 31 August 2105
• Robbery at Post Shop, Otara on 7 September 2015
• Robbery at BNZ Manukau on 7 September 2015
• Robbery at Post Shop , Otahuhu on 23 September 2015
• Robbery at Highland Park Post Shop on 25 September 2015
• Robbery at Botany Post Shop on 25 September 2015

He will appear in the Manukau District Court this morning

A 21-year-old man was arrested on 19 September 2015 and faces five charges as follows

• Aggravated Robbery at the Dawson Road Post Shop on 14 September 2015
• Robbery at ASB Botany on 31 August 2105
• Robbery at BNZ Manukau on 7 September 2015
• Assault with Intent to Rob at Mobil East Tamaki on 13 September 2015
• Aggravated Burglary at East Tamaki Mobil on 14 September 2015

He has been remanded in custody until his next appearance on 13 October 2015.

Police and Bank staff had been on high alert due to this offending and it is hoped that these arrests will provide a degree of reassurance to staff working in the banking community.

Detective Inspector Dave Lynch says that Police have very high detection rates for this type of offending.

"History will show that generally crimes of this type gain very little by way of rewards for offenders who are likely to receive substantial periods of imprisonment if convicted"
