Waikato Police working to map out the scene of an overnight fatal collision nearly had another to investigate this morning as a distracted speeding motorist was stopped just short of the cordon.
Sergeant Neil Mansill of the Huntly Strategic Traffic Unit was travelling back to the scene of last night’s crash when he noticed a car accelerating away from a Taupiri round-about.
“The car was travelling at 102km/h in an 80km/h speed zone when I first saw it and as he negotiated the round-about the driver, who was now in a 100km/h speed zone accelerated and was up to 112km/h when he noticed a marked patrol car behind him with flashing red and blue emergency lights.
“When stopped the driver told me he was not paying attention and was looking at his GPS, his car was stopped just short of the cordon where crash investigators were examining the scene of the crash.”
That crash claimed the life of 36-year-old Pukekohe man, Gordon James THOMPSON, who was also known as Anaru Jordan TAMEHANA.
Mr THOMPSON died in the collision which also left the driver of another car in a critically injured condition.
“Serious Crash Unit investigators had returned to the scene this morning to map out the scene of the crash and traffic management staff were on hand to warn motorists to slow down while media outlets had been advising of expected delays.
“Of concern for Police was that three drivers had been stopped on roads nearby travelling at speeds between 143-176km/h and these incidents indicate motorists are simply not paying attention to their driving environment.”
