Nelson Bays Police have been involved in an incident in which a man presented a firearm at officers in Motueka this afternoon and was subsequently shot.
The injured man is en-route to Wellington Hospital by helicopter. He is understood to be in a critical condition.
The incident started when Police were alerted to the location of a wanted man in a vehicle in Motueka earlier today.
Police located the vehicle about 3.30pm and the driver failed to stop for Police and a short pursuit ensued through residential streets of Motueka before coming to a no exit road.
An occupant then got out of the vehicle and presented a firearm at Police.
Officers negotiated with the man for some time in an attempt to resolve the situation. This was unsuccessful and he was shot shortly after 4pm.
He was then arrested and given immediate medical attention before being transported to hospital.
There will be a full investigation into the incident by Police and the IPCA is being notified.
