Police are advising members of the public in the central North Island to go about their normal business but maintain heightened awareness as a large team of armed police staff searches for offenders wanted following an armed incident near Whanganui this morning.
Central District Police Commander Superintendent Sue Schwalger says Police is firmly focussed on locating Dolphy Kohu and his associates after a Police car was rammed and Police officers were fired upon after their vehicle was taken about 2.30am today. No staff were injured and the Police vehicle has since been recovered intact. No Police firearms were accessed from the vehicle during the incident and these have been recovered by Police.
“Police appreciates that people living, working and travelling in the Ohakune, Raetihi and Waiouru areas are naturally concerned given the unfolding situation. While Police advises that people maintain a heightened awareness, they should take the usual precautions and go about their business as normal.
“While we are aware some schools in the area have decided to close, all roads remain open to traffic. We do have Police patrols and checkpoints set up in key locations looking out for these offenders, who are considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. The public can also expect to see armed police in throughout the region, along with Police vehicles and helicopter activity.
“We also warn those travelling not to pick up hitchhikers and to report any suspicious activity to Police immediately via 111.
“While the location of the offenders is still unknown, I can reassure the community that we are leaving no stone unturned to find them as soon as possible. We have a large and highly trained team of Police staff in the area actively looking for these offenders. This includes specialist armed staff including members of the STG and AOS. The Eagle helicopter is also assisting in the search.
“While these sorts of situations are thankfully rare, Police staff regularly train for exactly these sorts of situations and are very well equipped and prepared to respond. I can assure the public that Police will take whatever steps are appropriate to keep the community safe. We have access to a full range of tactical options and highly trained staff to deal with these sorts of situations.”
