At approximately 2:20am this morning Dunedin emergency services were called to a 2 car collision at the intersection of Hope and Stafford Streets in Dunedin.
A Ford Laser containing 6 persons being driven along Hope Street has failed to give way and collided with a Ford Courier Utility being driven along Stafford Street.
As a result of the crash an 18 year old female passenger in the Laser was momentarily trapped and reported as unconcious. CPR has been administered at the scene before the St Johns Ambulance has arrived and rushed the critical patient to Dunedin Public hospital. Tragically the female has died shortly after arrival.
The driver of the Laser was located a short distance away by police and is assisting police with enquiries.
Several passengers of the Laser were also injured and transported to hospital for treatment and are to be spoken with by police regarding the crash and events leading up to the crash. The male driver of the Courier was not injured as a result of the crash.
Dunedin Public Safety Staff, a Serious Crash Investigator from Invercargill, Dunedin CIB staff and a forensic photographer will be working on the scene and ongoing investigation. Victim support are assisting.
The Hope and Stafford Street intersection is currently closed and will be re-opened once the scene investigarion has been completed.
