Cell death update

Counties Manukau Police are investigating after a man was found unresponsive in the Manukau Police Station Custody Unit this morning.

The man, aged 64, was arrested at around 8:00pm on Monday night and spent the night in custody. He was routinely checked throughout the night, but on a subsequent check at 5:40am he was found unresponsive. He had been alone in the cell throughout the night.

Police staff commenced CPR immediately and an ambulance was called, but the man was pronounced deceased upon arrival of paramedics.

Police are awaiting results of a post mortem examination before the cause of death can be established.

"This incident is a tragedy and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family," says Counties Manukau Police District Commander Superintendent John Tims. "We are doing everything we can to support the family at this difficult time."

The man's name will not be released at this stage.

The incident has been referred to the IPCA.
