Search for Thames scaled back

1 min read

The official search for police dog Thames, missing in the Tararua Forest Park since Sunday, has been scaled back with a reduced presence during the next few days.

Several police staff will spend their days off combing the Totara Creek area for Thames, along with his handler Constable Mike Wakefield.

Senior Sergeant Mark Davidson, head of Wellington Police dog section, said police appreciate the many offers of help and supportive messages that have been received from concerned members of the public.

“It’s humbling to know so many people care about Thames and feel for his handler and family.

“Although we will still have some people in the bush in the coming days it is unfortunately now a bit of a waiting game.”

Trampers and hunters who will be in the Mt Holdsworth and Totara Creek area during the weekend are asked to keep a continued eye out for Thames and let police know if there is any sign of him.

“The terrain can be very unforgiving with steep gullies and bluffs suitable only for experienced people.

“We don’t want anyone to put themselves at risk, and this includes any choppers or light aircraft who must operate within the aviation regulations.”
