The 60-year-old man arrested for assault in relation to a violent incident at Tikipunga on Monday has been remanded in custody to reappear in court on February 9.
The man was given interim name suppression when he appeared in the Whangarei District Court yesterday.
About midnight on Monday January 26 Police were called to a Balmoral Road address after a violent altercation which left a 25-year-old man deceased.
The scene examination and post mortem have been completed. A number of items of interest have been located.
Detective Inspector Kevin Burke said these items and the information from the post mortem will be beneficial in making progress on the investigation.
Police are carrying out an area canvas of Balmoral Road today.
