The man found dead at the Woodville residential property on Sunday 4 January, 2015 has now been formally identified as 49-year-old James Whatuira of Pahiatua.
A post mortem conducted today has revealed Mr Whatuira sustained a single fatal gunshot wound. For investigative reasons Police will not be commenting any further on the nature of the injury at this stage.
"While the post mortem has added that extra piece to the puzzle of what occurred at the address, we still have much work to do in an effort to identify and locate whoever is responsible for Mr Whatuira's death," says Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Harrison, officer in charge of the investigation.
Officers have now established that Mr Whatuira did not reside at the Ormond Street property.
"Inquiries about the weapon's whereabouts are continuing and we are making some good progress in our area canvass as well as speaking to witnesses and taking statements. We have also had about half a dozen calls from the public after our appeal for information about movements at the property, and the information provided has been helpful with our ongoing inquires.
"I want to thank those who have rung in with information and strongly encourage anyone else who saw any people or vehicles frequent the Ormond Street property on the Sunday to contact Police."
A 20-strong team of officers are working on the investigation and the scene examination at the property is ongoing but is expected to be completed within the next 48 hours.
"We are also continuing to communicate with the Whatuira family as the investigation progresses and support them as they grieve," says Detective Senior Sergeant Harrison.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Constable Claire Adkins on (06) 210 2201. Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Note to media: The Whatuira family have asked for privacy at this time and Police seek the support of media in respecting their request for privacy as they come to terms with the loss of a loved one.
No further updates will be issued unless there are any major developments in the investigation.
