Canterbury Police can confirm that charges have been laid against the driver of a fleeing vehicle involved in a crash on Yaldhurst Road shortly before 5pm yesterday (24 November 2014).
Superintendent Gary Knowles, Canterbury Police District Commander, said “The 55 year old driver of the BMW will appear in Christchurch District Court today facing one charge of Failing to Stop When Followed by Red/Blue Lights and three charges of Reckless Driving Causing Injury.”
“The two passengers of the BMW are both in a stable condition in Christchurch Hospital. The 32 year old female back seat passenger is under Police guard and has been detained under the Misuse Use of Drugs Amendment Act. Inquiries are continuing into the second passenger, a 40 year old man. ”
Police investigations are continuing and will be overseen by Canterbury Police Crime Services Manager, Detective Inspector Virginia Le Bas.
The three occupants of the Honda Jazz were all taken to Christchurch Hospital. The 79 year old man who was driving the car is reported to be in a stable condition. The front seat passenger, an 80 year old female, is in a critical but stable condition. The other passenger, a 70 year old female, is in a serious but stable condition.
Superintendent Knowles says “The pursuit/crash has been referred to the IPCA and a senior investigator from outside Canterbury District will have oversight of an internal investigation into Police, Practices and Procedure. “
