Levin Police can now release the name of the 13-year-old female, who died in a two-vehicle crash on State Highway One, near Ötaki, yesterday afternoon (10 November, 2014).
She was Te Rehira McGhie, of Levin. Miss McGhie was a family friend of the driver of the Subaru vehicle.
Levin Police assisted by the Serious Crash Unit are continuing to investigate the crash.
Detective Darcy Parke of the Levin CIB says: "We are working to determine what factors have led to the crash and it is too early at this stage to comment on any charges."
Both of the drivers remain in the Palmerston North Hospital in a serious but stable condition. Officers have not yet formally spoken to either of them.
"A focus for us over the coming days is to continue to speak to witnesses and gather information to determine what has led up to this tragic event."
A scene examination at the crash site was completed yesterday afternoon.
"Miss McGhie's family want to express their sincere thanks to those who have provided support and offered their condolences. They have also asked for privacy at this time and we seek the support of media in respecting their request for privacy," says Detective Parke.
The death has now been referred to the Coroner.
