Canterbury Police have laid charges following a crash between a car and an ambulance near the intersection of Oxford Road and Merton Road on 3 October 2014.
The 17 year old female driver and sole occupant of the Toyota car will appear in Christchurch District Court on 20 November 2014 charged with Dangerous Driving and Driving With Excess Blood Alcohol.
While ambulance staff were uninjured, the ambulance (valued at $150k) has since been assessed as a write-off. The teenager is reported to have been driving unsupervised on a learner licence at the time of the crash.
Police investigations into the crash are continuing.
This is a timely reminder for all motorists on learner licences to ensure they have appropriate supervision at all times when they are driving on our roads. The alcohol limit for drivers under the age of 20 years old is zero and on 1st December 2014 the drink-driving limits for drivers aged 20 years and over reduce to 250mcg of alcohol per litre of breath or 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.
