Police can confirm there is one fatality resulting from the serious crash that occurred just after 2.30pm today on SH1 Orari-Rangitata Highway.
Two vehicles have crashed head-on at an easy corner just north of Orari Township. A Timaru man is deceased at the scene and three other people have been taken by ambulance to Timaru Hospital to have their injuries assessed.
The death has been referred to the Coroner.
No more details relating to the deceased man will be released until the next of kin have been informed.
Members of Canterbury Police Serious Crash Unit are on-route to the scene. Police investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.
SH1 is currently closed north of Orari and the diversions at Racecourse Road and Orari Station Road are likely to remain in place for some time. Police ask the public to avoid the area where possible and allow additional time to complete their journey while diversions are in place.
Police want all journeys to be safe journeys and would like to take this opportunity to remind all road users to take care on Canterbury’s roads.
Another update will be released tomorrow morning.
