If you're looking for some family fun for your children next weekend, then come along to the Palmerston North Esplanade and get them pedalling in the annual Kids Bike Jam.
The joint Palmerston North Police and Blue Light Trust Bike Jam is on Sunday 19 October, 2014 and is a fun day out for children to get on their bicycles and tackle the bush tracks of the Esplanade.
Inspector Brett Calkin, Manawatü Area Prevention Manager says the family-focused event is now in its fourth year and is an enjoyable day out for all, and an opportunity for the community to support Blue Light and meet their local officers.
“This is a great event which aims to get kids out and about on their bikes so that they are having a fun and exciting time in a safe and supervised environment. Cycling is a fun and healthy activity which encourages kids to get outside and explore the world, rather than sitting inside gaming or watching television.
The Police officers involved in this event are passionate about young people and understand the importance of keeping kids active and healthy for their physical and mental wellbeing. We know that active kids living a healthy lifestyle have better social outcomes and grow up to be happier and healthier adults.
The Bike Jam is just one way we can encourage kids to be involved in physical activity and Palmerston North is such a great city for cycling that it is just common sense for Police to support events like this.”
Blue Light Trust is a nationwide organisation designed to reduce the chances of young people becoming offenders and to encourage better relations between the police, young people, their families, and the community.
There is a $5 entry fee per child to participate in the Bike Jam and funds raised from the event will go back into various Blue Light youth events.
Not only are there spot prizes galore on the day but also a 'pimp my bike' competition where winners will be selected from each of the three age categories.
There are two different courses, one for the little kids (4-6 years) and a more challenging one for the big kids. All participants require a roadworthy bike and a suitable helmet.
The event kicks off at 10am and age categories and timings are as follows:
4-6 years — 10:30am (parent supervision is required)
7-9 years — 10:15am
10-12 years — 10am
The event will start and finish in the Esplanade car park off Fitzherbert Avenue. Entry forms are available from the Palmerston North Police Station and local schools. Kids can register on the day.
The event is also supported by local businesses, Sports Manawatü, Horizons Regional Council, Community Leisure Management (CLM), and the YMCA.
Note: Please listen to Classic Hits (97.8FM) on Sunday morning for any weather postponements.
