Motorists are being forewarned that the two new next generation fixed speed cameras on Wainui Road in Waiwhetu and on Wainuiomata Hill Road in Wainuiomata will be operational from Tuesday next week. The two cameras are going operational a day later than scheduled to allow for the completion of final assurance and testing activity.
Wellington District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Donna Laban, says "These sites have been selected after analysis of 10 years of crash data and extensive consultation with councils and local communities. During the last 10 years, there have been 168 speed-related crashes along this stretch of road, including one fatal crash and 53 injury crashes, seven of them serious."
"History tells us that this can be a dangerous stretch of road and, on balance, I think the community want us to take action to reduce speeds so we can reduce the likelihood of crashes and increase people's chances of surviving them if they do occur. Even small reductions in speed can make a big difference."
Both sites house the latest generation technology and are part of the rollout of 56 new fixed speed cameras being placed across the country in sites assessed as having a high risk of speed-related crashes. The current wet film camera will be decommissioned in the coming months once the new generation cameras are operational.
