A 14 year-old boy is dead and two 16 year-olds are in hospital, following a collision with a power pole this morning in Te Atatu Peninsula.
The crash happened at around 6.15am, when the Honda Accord car with 3 occupants failed to negotiate a right-hand bend and slammed into the pole on the corner of Yeovil and Taikata Road.
The deceased boy was a passenger in the backseat and died at the scene.
The driver and front-seat passenger, both 16 years old, received moderate injuries and remain in Auckland Hospital.
The Waitemata Serious Crash Unit is investigating, however at this stage the early indications are that speed was a factor. Enquiries are underway to determine whether alcohol was also involved. At this stage it's not known what the teenagers were doing or where they were going.
Sergeant Shaun Palmer, Waitakere Police says "We now have a family who are devastated, they've received news this morning that will change their lives forever, and we have a community who are grieving. This is the awful reality of the combination of youth, cars and speed and our thoughts are with the boys family."
The boy's immediate family has been advised however his name will not be released until all next of kin have been notified. Victim Support are assisting them.
The site has now been blessed by a local Kaumatua and the road has been re-opened.
