Counties Manukau Police Serious Crash Unit have attended a serious crash where an 18 year old man was hit by a train last night.
At around 10:20pm last night the man crossed the tracks at the pedestrian crossing near Homai station pushing his bike. A train travelling north hit the bike, throwing the man into a ditch next to the tracks and dragging the bike for several metres. He suffered serious head injuries and is currently in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
One other person was present, who was not injured.
Warning bells and flashing lights were both working at the level pedestrian crossing at the time, which is also protected by a pedestrian maze.
Road Policing Manager Inspector Richard Wilkie says this incident highlights the necessity of Rail Safety Week, which is currently underway.
“The impact of a train hitting a person or vehicle is devastating and this incident is no exception. Rail Safety Week is a reminder to all road users that the flashing bells and lights at crossings apply to both pedestrians and motorists.”
The driver involved has been relieved of his duties for a minimum of three days and trauma counselling has been offered.
The track reopened at 12:30am.
