Witnesses sought to fatal crash - South Taranaki

Hawera Police are seeking witnesses to a crash where a female jogger was killed in a collision with a car on Ohangai Road, Hawera, yesterday evening (26 May, 2014).

Both the jogger and the car were travelling up the road when the collision occurred at around 5:30pm.

Initial indications suggest the car was overtaking a 4WD or ute when they have struck the woman. The car driver has stopped and rendered first aid to the woman however she died at the scene.

Police have informed the woman's next of kin and can now release her name.

She was Deanne Cooper, aged 36, of Hawera.

“We are working to determine what factors have led to the crash and it is too early at this stage to comment on any charges.

"Officers are speaking to the car driver and also want to speak to the driver of the 4WD or ute as they are a key witness. We also want to speak to anyone that may have witnessed the crash or has any other information," says Acting Senior Sergeant Robyn Burnett of the Hawera Police.

The Serious Crash Unit is continuing to investigate the crash.
