Police are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution in the current weather conditions.
Acting Canterbury road policing manager, Acting Inspector Glenn Nalder, advises that if people do not need to travel today they should stay off the roads.
"Police are not issuing a blanket warning to stay off the roads. But people should check with their places of work and other commitments, and if they do not need to travel then please - stay off the roads.
"If people are driving then extreme care is necessary.
"Slow down, increase your following distances and be aware that journeys will take a lot longer today in the current conditions.
"Try to avoid flooded areas and slow down if traveling through flooded roads."
Police are out in numbers this morning attending multiple weather-related callouts and emergencies, including assisting with evacuations and rescuing people stuck in cars. Patrols have also located vehicles floating in water on Barrington Street.
Police are continuing to assist with road closures and roading issues, slips and flooded houses across the city.
Only a handful of weather-related motor vehicle crashes have been reported, but no more than on a normal weekday. Police have not received any reports of weather-related injuries.
"We urge people to check on neighbours, friends and family," says Acting Inspector Nalder. "If you find anyone needing assistance please contact emergency services."
