He was Jamie Richard Haggath, aged 20, of Loburn.
The incident occurred at around 5.20pm on Carrs Road, Loburn.
Sergeant Colin Stewart of Rangiora Police says initial enquiries indicate Mr Haggath had been riding his skateboard on Carrs Road, Loburn.
He may have lost control of the skateboard and stepped into the path of an oncoming vehicle, travelling east on Carrs Road, in order to retrieve it.
Enquiries into the incident are continuing. Police are speaking with witnesses and would like to speak with any other witnesses that have not yet been contacted, Sergeant Stewart says.
At this stage Police say there are no indications that speed or alcohol appear to be factors.
Carrs Road is a sealed, 100kmph road. Weather conditions at the time were dry and light was good.
"The incident is a sad but timely reminder that pedestrians and drivers need to be aware of each others' presence on the road, and consider their safety at all times," Sergeant Stewart says.
