1 min read

Counties Manukau Police Serious Crash Unit is investigating this morning after a 4 year old boy was hit by a light truck on Union Road, Mauku at about 8:10pm last night.  The boy died from his injuries at Starship Hospital later that night.

The truck was travelling along Union Road and passing Mauku School.  The boy was part of a group that was had been using the school pool and had been and walking between the school and a house opposite the school.

"Unfortunately, a crash has taken place between the truck and boy on the road," says Inspector Neil Fisher, Counties Manukau Police Road Policing Manager.

"We're deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life," says Inspector Fisher.  "We really hope that everyone takes care on the road this summer, both motorists and pedestrians; road safety is everyone's responsibility.  We're aiming for a summer where no other families have to go through the trauma of losing a loved one."

Counties Manukau Police are taking part in a national campaign to lower the road toll over summer.  The Safer Summer campaign hopes to reduce the number of road fatalities and hospitalisations resulting from road crashes throughout the country.
