NZ Police to take part in International Tweet-A-Thon this Friday

1 min read

NZ Police are gearing up to take part in the second International Police Tweet-a-thon on Friday 1 November.

The day-long event will give the public an insight into police experiences from the frontline and showcase the work our general duties cops, search and rescue teams, neighbourhood policing teams, dog handlers and highway patrol teams do each day to keep New Zealand communities safe.

@BOPPolice, @ManukauPolice and @BetterWorkStory will be taking part using the hashtags #poltwt and #nzpolice.

The first international tweet-a-thon in March saw over 200 police jurisdictions from 10 countries come together to share experiences from their day-to-day roles. The #poltwt hashtag became a trending topic in five countries.  New Zealand was the first country to begin the tweet-a-thon and several local tweets and photos were shared around the world.  NZ Police's photos of police dogs dressed up for their graduation were particular favourites.  The event was so popular that opportunistic spammers started using the #poltwt hashtag to reach international audiences.

General Manager Public Affairs, Karen Jones says, “NZ Police actively use social media to spread prevention advice, make communities safer and to build trust and confidence through online community engagement. This event is a fantastic way to give the public a window into our world, as well as to gain an understanding of differences between New Zealand and other jurisdictions around the globe. We are looking forward to getting involved in an even bigger tweet-a-thon on 1 November.”

To get amongst the action, follow @BOPPolice, @ManukauPolice and @BetterWorkStory. Please note, in order to protect the privacy of individuals involved, specific times, names and locations will be removed from tweets.
