Enjoy Yourself But Take It Easy On the Drink

2 min read

Dunedin Police say enjoy yourself and have a good time at the international rugby match being held in the city this weekend but don't ruin your chances of getting into the game by drinking too much.

The All Blacks versus Wallabies match on tomorrow evening at the Forsyth Barr stadium is only 500 tickets short of a sell out, and a large influx of people is expected into the city to attend the match.

Police will be taking a preventative approach and say anyone who arrives at the match venue who is clearly intoxicated will not be allowed in.

"We'll be assisting security at the gates and there will be a focus on ensuring that intoxicated or disorderly patrons are not allowed into the ground," says Dunedin Clutha Waitaki Area Commander Inspector Greg Sparrow.

"It's going to be a great weekend in Dunedin with a huge atmosphere. Remember that you don't need to drink a whole lot to enjoy yourself. Ease up on the drink - or you could miss out on all the fun. Don't arrive at the venue drunk or you won't get in - it's as simple as that," says Inspector Sparrow.

As licensed premises, the Forsyth Barr stadium has an obligation under law not to allow intoxicated people into the facility or allow them to remain on the premises.

"It's important that everyone gets a chance to enjoy the match so don't spoil the event for yourself, your mates or others around you by drinking too much," Inspector Sparrow says.

As with any large event, Police have extra staff rostered on over the weekend to deal with any issues that arise.

Police expect large crowds flocking into the CBD after the match and say people should make plans about how they are going to get home safely before they head out for the night.

"Stick with your mates and look after each other when you're out, and catch a cab home if you've been drinking or arrange for a sober driver."
