At around 3am this morning Police were called to the scene of a motor vehicle crash on State Highway 1, near the intersection of Valerie Close (near Ransom Wines), after a car collided with a tree.
A young man aged in his twenties, who was the sole occupant of the car, died at the scene.
State Highway One was closed in both directions for several hours and re-opened shortly after 7am.
The Waitemata Serious Crash Unit is investigating, and at this stage the cause of the crash is unknown. The investigation will take at least several weeks to complete and will consider all issues including whether speed, alcohol or weather conditions were factors in the crash.
Police are now working to identify the victim and inform his next of kin.
