Police visible across Wellington overnight

1 min read

Police in Wellington will be focussed on maintaining a highly visible presence in the CBD overnight.

Acting District Commander Superintendent Sue Schwalger says double the normal number of staff will be on duty in the city this evening and during the night.

“All buildings in the CBD are secured but police will be visible across the city tonight to prevent anyone taking advantage of the current situation.

“Anyone coming into the CBD this evening is asked to stay away from the cordoned off areas which are there for good safety reasons.

“We want people to feel safe in the city and be reassured by the police presence.

“Extra staff will also be available across the district should they be required, however there have been no issues from a policing perspective attributed to the earthquake since yesterday afternoon.

“While police continue to support the response by Civil Defence and council staff, routine policing is continuing across Wellington district and we are responding to emergency calls as usual.” says Superintendent Schwalger.

Information and advice is being updated at the Wellington City Council website wellington.govt.nz and also the Facebook page of the Wellington Regional Emergency Management office www.facebook.com/WREMOnz
