The Minister of Police, Hon Anne Tolley, is to recognise three public safety volunteers at ceremonies in Wellington and Auckland this week.
The Minister’s Public Safety Volunteer Awards will recognise the contributions of volunteers who assist both Police and Corrections in their critical role of keeping our communities safe.
The inaugural presentation of the awards has been scheduled to coincide with National Volunteer Week, New Zealand’s largest celebration of volunteering and civic participation.
2013 ceremony details and award recipients:
Tuesday 18 June 2013, 2pm, at The Royal New Zealand Police College, Porirua:
• Barbara Halliwell - Victim Support volunteer. Barbara is being recognised for her significant contribution to Victim Support. She has been a volunteer support worker since 1998, supporting people through the effects of crime and trauma.
• Dorothy Lomas - Independent volunteer with Neighbourhood Support New Zealand (NSNZ). Dorothy is the longest-serving member of the NSNZ Executive and is the current National Secretary.
Wednesday 19 June, 1pm, at St Peter’s Anglican Church Hall, 11 Killarney Street, Takapuna, North Shore City:
• Peggy Parekohu Hughes – Volunteer with the North Shore Māori Wardens. Peggy, who turns 80 this year, first established the North Shore Māori Wardens group 40 years ago. Peggy is an outstanding example of a community leader who, with the support of her family, has dedicated her life to voluntary work. Peggy is a mother of four, a grandmother of eight and a great-grandmother of six.
Both events will be attended by the Honourable Anne Tolley, Minister of Police.
