Wellington Police are issuing a challenge to the community to have the first Victim Free Friday tomorrow.
Last year on the last Friday before Christmas, there were 12 reported crimes in the Wellington CBD, each of which resulted in victims.
Three-quarters of these crimes were dishonesty-related.
Wellington Area Commander Inspector Chris Scahill says "Our goal is to have one day where there will be no victims of crime in the Wellington CBD".
The reporting period for the day will run from midnight to midnight in the Wellington CBD Liquor Ban Area.
"Police will have a strong presence on the city streets and roads throughout summer.
"We've already deployed our summer roster which will see more officers out conducting street patrols in the central city, random breath testing checkpoints and licence premises checks.
"The street patrols will also be supported by the new CCTV monitoring hub in Wellington Central Police Station.
"Today we are launching our top 10 summer safety tips.
"We can prevent crime and victims by encouraging people to take a few simple steps to keep themselves safe.
"We'll be promoting the top 10 tips with our safer city partners including the Wellington City Council, Victim Support and Crimestoppers"
"The big goal is to have less victims of crime. By looking out for yourself and each other we can all play a role in keeping Wellington safe", says Inspector Scahill.
