1 min read

A search and rescue operation is under way off Little Wanganui on the West Coast of the South Island for a man reported overdue from a fishing trip.

The local man left Little Wanganui about midday in a 4.2 metre Ospray boat and was expected home about two hours later.

Police were notified that he was overdue about 6pm by the man’s partner.

Search and Rescue Coordinator Sergeant Sean Judd of Westport Police said weather in the area was good and the sea was calm, however it is very cold.

A helicopter is currently searching. Sergeant Judd said a full scale search would resume at first light.

The man is not believed to have a lifejacket or any other survival equipment with him.
