Update on Turangi crash

Police are recovering the bodies of three people killed in a serious crash on Lake Rotoaira Rd, also known as SH46, Otukao near Turangi.

The crash happened at 7.30am this morning when a people mover van rolled, throwing several people from the vehicle. Up to 8 people were on board.

Three people died at the scene. Another critically injured person has been airlifted to Waikato Hospital. Two people with moderate injuries have been taken to Rotorua Hospital while two further vicitms with lesser injuries are being treated at Taupo Hospital.

A second vehicle of 8 people with the group was following the one which crashed. Occupants of that vehicle are being cared for by Police and other emergency service workers in Turangi.

It is believed the group were overseas visitors to New Zealand and police are working to establsh the nationalities of those involved and contact the relevant embassies.

Further details about the group will be available once arrangements are finalised for overseas notifications.

The Bay of Plenty Serious Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the accident. SH46 remains closed between SH1 and SH47 while the crash scene is being examined.
