A number of roads around the Nelson region are closed and Police advise the public to stay at home today unless it is essential to travel.
Roads into Nelson city are gridlocked making it difficult for emergency services to get to people in need.
Police also advise people to be prepared for the possibility they may need to evacuate and have raincoats, torches and essential medications ready. People are advised to stay with friends as a first choice and only go to the evacuation centre at the Suburban Club in Tahunanui if friends or family are not an option.
