Information sought following assault on Te Awamutu officer

Waikato Police are appealing for information from the public following a serious assault on one of their colleagues responding to a call from local residents in Te Awamutu overnight.

Detective Sergeant Ross Patterson of the Te Awamutu CIB said an officer was called to a report of suspicious activity on Rewi St shortly after midnight.

"On arriving the officer found what appeared to be a man breaking into a car.

"While trying to arrest the offender the officer was seriously assaulted, the injured officer has managed to break free from his attacker and raise the alarm and the offender has fled."

Mr Patterson said several units from a across the District responded to the incident including a Police Dog unit which tracked the offender for some distance but the offender remains at large and enquiries are still underway to identify and locate him.

"The officer was taken to Waikato Hospital for treatment for his injuries and he has been subsequently released and is recuperating at home.

"At this time we would like to speak to anyone who was in the area of Rewi St early this morning who saw anything untoward or from anyone who knows the identity of the offender."
